Our very first Feature Friday dives in, to take a closer look at our Product Designer on staff; Pelgrim Vandekerkhove. And even more specifically, a cup holder he designed as one of his first projects!

Pelgrim started working here at Dimension Alley in June of 2015. He got his degree at UAntwerpen in Product Development located in Belgium.

His inspiration to create came from two previous unfortunate accidents involving spilled tea and computers. Being new to 3D printing world, Pelgrim’s task at hand was to develop a 3D printed cupholder to aid the past misfortunes Dimension Alley had experienced. He was to familiarize himself with how design could be a part of 3D printing.

For encouragement, and inspiration, Vandekerkhove turned to the popular website, thingyverse.com where he found a model with quality characteristic. (Model #261023) From there, he created a design in which he made several variations, experimenting with print time, size, and durability. The goal was to be able to fit a variety of different size cups, as well as be compatible with different size tables.

“I think the hardest part for me was getting the threading tolerance right. Since I had never worked with 3D printers, I didn’t know how much tolerance to account for.” Said Vandekerkhove.

All in all, the project in total took about a week to develop. Thanks to Pelgrim, we now have a safe, spill free zone here at Dimension Alley.
