June 28th, 2014, Gavril Princip of the Red hand Gang succeeded in assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg in Sarajevo. This poignant event was the spark the started WWI. To mark the 100th anniversary The Collegium Hungaricum in Berlin unveiled its exhibition the Great Illusion on 27th June 2014. Exhibition curator David Szauder was one of the artists who created an installation exhibit. His work, the organic monument of the First World war is a spacial object based on the theory of network researching. The cornerstones are geological coordinates where key events of the war took place. These are physically linked by string to one another to create a network of connection expressing the relationship of cause and effect on the events through the continuity which is all of our history.
1 week before the unveiling, we at DimensionAlley were contacted by Fanni, at the Collegium Hungaricum to 3D print a physical model of the heigh map installation. David prepared the model for 3D print into a .stl file using Blender software. We printed a test piece and hand carried it over the the Collegium for approval. Then came the order, 70 pieces to be printed in 6 days in time for the unveiling. Our trustee Makerbot replicator 2 and Flash Forge creator (as well as Norma!) went into overdrive to print all the pieces in time. Everyone at DimensionAlley worked together to ensure all the pieces were finished in time.
The Pièce de résistance for DimensionAlley: As the installation itself was too large to be unveiled, a red ribbon wrapped around one of the 3D printed models was cut during the ceremony.
Congratulation David on a impressive and moving exhibition.
Visit the exhibition until 27.10 at the Collegium Hungaricum, Dorotheenstr. 12 in Berlin
